We consider each
organization to be an entity unto itself; a
person, so to speak, with its own brilliant
characteristics and idiosyncrasies. Every
entity has its youth, a time filled with

characteristics at this stage are
creativity, flexibility, and risk-taking and
the “personality” of the entity is very
close to that of its human parents.
As the organization
grows, it becomes a bit more stable, more
diverse, and certainly, begins to develop a
personality all its own. Like an adolescent,
it goes through periods of rapid growth and
expansion, consuming resources like food in
the refrigerator, and sprouting arms and
legs in all directions.
As an entity grows into
maturity, it has learned that risk-taking
doesn’t always pay off, and sometimes it can
be down-right dangerous. It grows more
slowly, more cautiously, and more time is
spent making decisions and maintaining its
health. Just like an adult human, mature
entities are continually challenged by their
own complex nature, and by the magnitude of
their responsibilities.
